CROSSFLOWMEMBRANEFILTRATIONENHANCEDBYANEXTERNALDCELECTRICFIELD:AREVIEWH.M.HUOTARI,G.TRA¨GAcRDH*andI.H.HUISMAN*VTTEnergy,Jyva¨skyla¨,FinlandDivisionofFoodEngineering,DepartmentofChemistry,LundUniversity,Lund,SwedenTechniquesforfoulingpreventioninmembrane�ltrationareneeded.Thispaperreviewstheprocessdesign,theoryandsomeapplicationsofcross�owmembrane�ltrationenhancedbyaDCelectric�eld.Anelectric�eldcanbeappliedacrossthemembraneorthemembraneitselfcanbetheelectrode.Theperformanceofthe�ltrationprocessis,inbothcases,primarilyimprovedduetoelectrophoresis.Electro-osmosiswasfoundtobesigni�cantinsomecaseswhenanelectric�eldwasappliedacrossthemembrane.Thetheoryofelectricallyenhancedcross�owmembrane�ltrationisquitecomplexandthereisnogenerallyacceptedmodeldescribingthisprocess.Signi�cantenhancementofthe�uxcomparedwiththe�uxwithnoelectric�eldhasbeenfoundinthe�ltrationofparticlesorcolloidswithhighelectrophoreticmobilityusingapressureatwhichthecakewasformedwithoutanelectric�eldandanelectric�eldstrengthat
