TubularMembraneBioreactorinMunicipalWasteWaterTreatmentAuthor:Dr.ChristophLukaschek;VATECHWABAGGmbH;Siemensstrasse89,1210Vienna,AustriaObjectivesSince1999VATECHWABAGcarriesoutpilottestsfortheimplementationofthetubularultra-filtrationprocessinmunicipalwastewatertreatment(MARAPUR®).Themainprojectobjectivesare(a)demonstrationofalong-termstableoperationundereconomicfeasibleconditions,(b)optimisationofchemicalcleaning,(c)theevaluationandimprovementofthenewlydevelopedairinjectionsystemand(d)theremovalofpharmaceuticaltracesubstancesinthewastewater.In72monthsor52,000hofcontinuousoperationinvestigationswereconductedatalaboratoryplant(10p.e),twopilotplants(100p.e,and250p.e.)andcurrentlyatademonstrationplantof500p.e.AdvantagesofMARAPUR®:TheapplicationofMBR(membranebioreactor)towastewatertreatmentoffersthefollowingmostpromisingadvantages:Increasedactivatedsludgeconcentration(MLSS10-15g/l),thusreductionofaerationtankvolumeNosettlementtankandthereforeLittlespacerequirementforthewastewatertreatmentplantPossibilityforthedecentralizedtreatmentofwastewaterExtensionofmembraneareaiseasilyaccomplishedHighsludgeage(SRT30-100d)Higheffluentquality,dueto100%retentionofsuspendedsolidsandmicro-organisms(0,04µMCut-off)HighlyefficientbiozenoseduetohighsludgeageandtotalretentionofmicroorganismsBackgroundofMARAPUR®Acombinationofmembraneseparationandbioreactorshasresultedinanewwastewatertreatmentfocus.Theapplicationofmembraneshasledtoacompacttreatmentsystemwithsuperioreffluentquality,lowsludgegenerationandresistancetoshockloads.Since1991membranebioreactors(MBR)havebeenappliedsuccessfullyonafullscaleforconcentratedwastewatersuchasindustrialwastewaterandlandfillleachate.Inrecentyears,greatemphasishasbeenplacedontheapplicationofMBRinmunicipalwastewatertreatment.Oneofthelargestfull-scaleMBRplantscurrentlyinoperation,whichwaserectedbyVATECHWABAGfor10.800m³/d,islocatedinGreaterGlasgow,Scotland.WWTPNordkanal(GER),anMBRwithacapacityof80,000p.e.usingsubmergedmembranes,justrecentlyerectedbyVATECHWAB
