Novelgrapheneoxidespongesynthesizedbyfreeze-dryingprocessfortheremovalof2,4,6-trichlorophenolJialiWang,abXueliGao,*abYuhongWangcandCongjieGaoabGrapheneoxide(GO)spongymaterialsasenvironmentalpollutantscavengershavedrawngreatattentionowingtotheirultralargesurfacearea,uniquespongystructureandhydrogen-bondinginteractions.Herein,anovelGOspongewassynthesizedbyanimprovedHummer'smethodfollowedbyafreeze-dryingprocessanditsadsorptioncapacityof2,4,6-trichlorophenol(TCP)wasinvestigated.ThestructuralfeaturesofGOsheetsandGOspongehavebeencharacterizedbyFouriertransforminfraredspectroscopy(FTIR),X-raydiffraction(XRD),Ramanspectroscopy,X-rayphotoelectronspectroscopy(XPS),atomicforcemicroscope(AFM)andscanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM).SpecificsurfaceareaassessmentandporedistributionmeasurementswereanalyzedbyMicromeriticsASAP2020.TheadsorptionmechanismandkineticsstudyofTCPonGOsheetsandGOspongewerestudiedusingabatchequilibrationmethod.TheresultssuggestthattheGOspongepresentedahigheradsorptioncapacitythanGOsheetsduetoitslargespecificsurfaceareaandTCPhadanoptimumadsorptioncapacityonbothGOsheetsandGOspongeatpH2.0–6.0.AdsorptionisothermsandkineticscurvesofTCPonGOsheetsandGOspongewerenonlinear,indicatingahomogeneousmonolayerchemicaladsorptionprocess.1.IntroductionHazardouspersistentaromaticmaterialsproducedbyphar-maceutical,petrochemical,dyes,pesticides,andotherindus-trieshavebeenasevereenvironmentalconcern.2,4,6-Trichlorophenol(TCP)isaverycommonpollutantintheaquaticenvironmentduetoitstoxicity,stability,andbio-accumulation.1DischargeofTCP-contaminatedwastewaterintoaquaticenvironmentswithoutadequatetreatmentcanposeadverseeffectsonthehumannervoussystemandcausemanyhealthdisorders.2Numerousstudieshavefocusedontheeffi-cientremovalofTCPfromaqueoussolutionssuchasbypho-tocatalysis,3adsorption,4andelectrolysis.5DuetothestructuralstabilityandpersistenceofTCPintheenvironment,adsorptionhasbeenfoundtobesuperiortoothertechniquesasaresultofitslow-cost,highefficiencyandeasyoperation.Graphene(GN)isatwo-dimensi
