ImprovementofDyePropertiesoftheAzoPigmentYellow12UsingaMicromixer-BasedProcessHelmutPennemann,*,†StephanForster,‡JoachimKinkel,‡VolkerHessel,†HolgerLo¨we,†andLiWu§Institutfu¨rMikrotechnikMainzGmbH,Carl-Zeiss-Strasse18-20,55129Mainz,Germany,Georg-Simon-Ohm-FachhochschuleNu¨rnberg,Kesslerplatz12,90489Nu¨rnberg,Germany,andTrustChem,No.28WantangRoad,Hangzhou,310012,PRChinaAbstract:Thepropertiesofcolouredpigmentsareprimarilyaffectedbytheparticlesizeaswellasthesizedistribution.Asbothareinfluencedbytheproductionprocess,thepigmentsynthesisofYellow12wasinvestigatedusingamicromixerapparatus.Themicromixerensuresfastmixingbymultilaminationofthinlamellaeandtherebyafastercompletemixingofthereactantscomparedtobatchprocesses.Itwasfoundthatthemicromixer-basedprocessleadstoasmallerpigmentsizedistribution.Thisresultsinanimprovementofthepigmentproperties.ComparedtoacommerciallyavailableYellow12standardtheglossinesswasincreasedby73%andthetransparencyby66%withunchangedtinctorialpower.IntroductionDuetothegrowinguseofcolourprintinginthefieldofwrappingpaperandprintmediathedemandfororganiccolouredpigmentscontinuestogrow.Amongstorganiccolouredpigmentstheazopigmentscomprisethemostwell-knownclass.OneexampleisYellow12whichisusedasyellowpigmentformulticolourprinting.Theyellowpigmentisthelastcomponentoftheprintingprocessandtherefore,ithastohavespecialcolourproperties.Ononehandahightransparencyisneededtoavoidconcealmentoftheformerprintedcolours;ontheotherhandahighstrengthofcolourandahightinctorialpowerarerequired.Thecolourpropertiesofpigmentsareprimarilyconnectedwiththeparticlesizeandtheparticlesizedistribution.Bothareaffectedbytheproductionprocess.Inanindustrial-scaleazopigmentsaretypicallysynthe-sisedindiscontinuousbatchprocessesusingstirredtankswithvolumesintherangeof20-80m3.Thereby,thecouplingcomponentisaddedtoastirredsolutionorsuspensionofthediazocomponentortheotherwayaround.Byusingsuchbatchprocedures,particleswitharelativelybroadsizedistributioncanbeachieved.Thisisoftenconnectedwithdisadvanta
