Performance assessment of different STPs basedRESEARCHARTICLEOpenAccessPerformanceassessmentofdifferentSTPsbasedonUASBfollowedbyaerobicposttreatmentsystemsAbidAliKhan1,2*,RubiaZahidGaur3,InduMehrotra1,VasileiosDiamantis4,BeniLew5,6andAbsarAhmadKazmi1AbstractThispaperpresenttheexperiencesgainedfromthestudyoftenupflowanaerobicsludgeblanket(UASB)basedsewagetreatmentplants(STPs)ofdifferentcitiesofIndia.Presently37UASBbasedSTPswereunderoperationandabout06UASBbasedSTPsareunderconstructionandcommissioningphaseatdifferenttowns.ThenatureofsewagesignificantlyvariedateachSTP.TwoSTPwerereceivingsewagewithhighsulfateandheavymetalsduetothemixingofindustrialwaste.ThetreatmentperformanceofallUASBreactorsintermsofBOD,CODandTSSwereobservedbetween55to70%respectively.Theposttreatmentunitsdownflowhangingsponge(DHS)andAerationfollowedbyactivatedsludgeprocess(ASP)attwoSTPswereperformingwellandenabletoachievetherequireddisposalstandards.ResultsindicatetheeffluentqualityintermsofBODandSSwerelessthan30and50mg/L
