37-The microbial ecology of permafrostAnestimated25%ofthelandareaonEarthisunder-lainbypermafrost.Theclassicdefinitionofpermafrostissoilthathasremainedfrozen(thatis,below0°C)foratleast2consecutiveyears.However,someancientper-mafrosthasremainedfrozenduringseveralperiodsofglaciation.Infact,permafrostcanbeupto1–3millionyearsoldintheArcticandevenolderinAntarctica.Dependingonthelocationandclimaticconditionsatthetime,thelandsurfacethatisnowpermafrostwasnotinitiallyfrozenandmayhavebeencoveredwitheithervegetationorwater.Someoftheplantandanimalmate-rialandmicrobialbiomassthataccumulatedduringtheCO2-richatmosphereandwarmperiodsinthehistoryoftheEarthbecamepreservedinthepermafrostdur-ingcoolingandglaciationevents.Althoughtheplantsandanimalsthatbecametrappedduringthistransitionmettheirdemise,currentevidencesuggeststhatmanyofthemicroorganismswereabletoadaptandevenremainactive.Recentresearchsuggeststhatpermafrostregionswillbeaffectedbyincreasesinglobaltemperaturesandsubsequentpermafrostthawwillprobabl
